The Great & Grand Rumpus - State library

From Sketch to Structure: Design Thinking for Cross-Disciplinary Teams and Post-Pandemic Connection.

Project Overview

"The Great & Grand Rumpus" was a post-pandemic community exhibition that transformed children's imaginative sketches into a large-scale, tactile installation. My role centred on bridging creative vision and physical execution within a 30-person cross-disciplinary team of architects, industrial, graphic, and interior designers.

Planning & Design

We began by interpreting the children's creative concepts, translating them into a unified design plan.

Material Preparation

This was a hands-on stage. I was personally responsible for the meticulous hand-measuring and cutting of all cardboard components for the tail-end sections and signage. The challenge was maintaining absolute precision, as any error would have irreversible consequences later.

Prototype Testing & Assembly

Here, we conducted the first assembly of all pre-fabricated pieces. This phase was a true test of our accuracy; any misfit required us to go back and recut materials. I worked closely with peers to consult on structural integrity and ensure the installation was safe and sound.

Final Installation & Completion

The stage where all components came together on-site to create the final, immersive experience.

Value & Reflection

This project was more than building an exhibition; it was about rebuilding connection. Emerging from COVID-19 restrictions, the act of co-creating—touching materials, problem-solving face-to-face with masks on, and physically assembling the structure—was profoundly meaningful. It underscored that design is not just about visuals, but a vital bridge between people, disciplines, and ideas, capable of creating lasting cultural value and human warmth even in challenging times.
